Play Connections Unlimited in 3 steps.

01

Read the 16 Words

Every puzzle gives you a 4×4 grid of 16 words. Hidden inside are four categories of four words each. Scan the grid and look for obvious pairs and triples that share something in common.

02

Select Four & Submit

Tap any four words that you think form a group, then hit Submit. If you are right, the group locks in with its difficulty colour band. If you are wrong, you lose one of four lives.

03

Beat the Puzzle

Find all four categories before running out of lives. Stuck? Use up to three hints to reveal a category without losing a life, then share your emoji result grid with friends.

The Connections Unlimited strategy guide.

Connections Unlimited is deceptively simple — sixteen words, four groups, four lives. But the difference between a streak and a stumble is often a single decision. The best players don't just look for obvious pairs; they scan for traps. Words that seem to belong together might actually be decoys for a more devious category. A classic example: seeing BAT, BALL, GLOVE, and FIELD and immediately assuming "baseball." Sometimes that's right, but often one of those words belongs to a wordplay category like "things that follow 'snow'" — and you've just burned a life.

The most reliable strategy is to delay your first submission. Spend a full minute scanning all sixteen words and mentally tagging every possible connection. Look for suffix patterns (words that can be followed by "cake"), hidden words (planets or body parts tucked inside longer words), and homophones (words that sound like letters). The purple category is almost always wordplay — if you can spot it early, you save the rest of the grid.

Use hints strategically. A hint reveals a whole category, which is powerful, but you only get three. The best time to use one is when you're stuck between two possible groupings and a hint would immediately resolve the ambiguity. Don't burn hints on the yellow category — that's the one you should be able to solve on your own.

Pro tip

Look for words that can't be grouped with any other three. Those are often the purple category — the "one of these things is not like the others" group.

The Free Connections Unlimited Game

Connections Unlimited is a free online word grouping game inspired by the NYT Connections puzzle. You are given sixteen words and must find four hidden categories of four. Each category has its own difficulty — yellow for the easiest associations, then green, blue and purple for the most devious wordplay.

What sets Connections Unlimited apart is that there is no daily limit. The original game releases one puzzle per day; here, every press of the New Puzzle button instantly loads a fresh grid. You can binge ten puzzles in a row, take your time on a single hard one, or use the game as a warm-up before the daily. The categories shuffle each time, so no two games feel the same.

The game keeps track of your win streak, games played and games won, all stored locally in your browser. Every puzzle gives you four lives (mistakes) and three hints, so there is a real risk/reward decision every time you submit: guess boldly and risk a life, or play it safe and burn a hint.

When you finish, you can share a Wordle-style emoji grid showing your colour bands and mistakes without spoiling the actual words. It is the same satisfying share you know from the daily game, but available any time you want.

Connections puzzles use four colour bands to show how tricky each category is. Yellow is the easiest (usually obvious word associations), green is slightly harder, blue is trickier (often wordplay or homophones), and purple is the hardest, usually involving puns, hidden words, or a very specific shared trait.
