Text diff FAQ.
A text diff checker compares two blocks of text and highlights every difference between them — added lines, removed lines and modified lines. It is used by developers reviewing code changes, writers proofreading drafts, and anyone tracking revisions between two versions of a document.
Side-by-side shows the original text on the left and the modified text on the right, aligned line by line. Unified shows both versions in a single column, with removed lines prefixed by a minus sign and added lines prefixed by a plus sign. Unified view is more compact and works better on small screens.
When a line is modified rather than replaced entirely, the diff checker runs a second comparison at the word level. Only the specific words that changed are highlighted with a stronger colour and a subtle underline or strikethrough, so you can see exactly what was edited inside the line.
Yes. The options bar lets you ignore whitespace differences, ignore letter case, and ignore blank lines. These options affect only the comparison algorithm — the original text is still displayed exactly as you pasted it.
The comparison runs entirely in your browser, so performance depends on your device. For the best experience, keep each text under 2,000 lines. Larger inputs may take a moment to process but will still work.
Absolutely. All comparison, highlighting and export happens locally in your browser. Nothing is uploaded to a server. Your texts are stored only in your own browser's local storage so your work is preserved when you close the tab.
Yes. The diff checker works with any plain text — source code, JSON, XML, CSV, configuration files, Markdown and prose. It treats all input as text and highlights differences line by line, then word by word inside modified lines.
Use Copy Diff to copy a unified diff to your clipboard, Download HTML to save a self-contained report you can open in any browser, or Download PDF to generate a printable PDF summary with statistics and the highlighted diff.
