Frequently Asked Questions.
Everything you need to know about the Word Counter.
The word counter tokenizes your text by splitting on whitespace and punctuation to identify every distinct word. It updates in real time with each keystroke — no refresh or button press needed.
Yes — both are shown simultaneously. "Characters" is the total length including spaces, newlines, and punctuation. "No Spaces" counts only letters, numbers, and non-whitespace characters.
Reading time is estimated using the scientifically cited average adult silent reading speed of 238 words per minute. Speaking time uses 130 words per minute — a typical conversational pace for public speakers. Both are shown to the nearest second for short texts or rounded to minutes for longer ones.
The Flesch Reading Ease score rates text on a 0–100 scale. Scores of 80–100 are very easy (children's books, plain English). Scores of 60–80 are standard (most web content). Scores of 30–60 are fairly difficult (academic writing). Below 30 is very difficult (legal/technical documents).
Vocabulary density is the ratio of unique words to total words expressed as a percentage. For example, if a 100-word text contains 60 different words, the vocabulary density is 60%. Higher density generally indicates richer, more varied writing. Lower density suggests repetition.
Enter any target number in the "Word Goal" field above the text editor. A progress bar immediately shows how close your current text is to that goal. The bar turns green when you reach or exceed your target.
